Fireworks Safety Reminder from the Bushkill Township Police Department

As we approach the summer season, the Bushkill Township Police Department would like to remind all residents and visitors of the importance of fireworks safety. While fireworks can be a fun and festive way to celebrate, they must be used responsibly to prevent injuries and fires.

What’s Legal in Pennsylvania?

In Pennsylvania, it is legal to purchase and use “Class C” consumer-grade fireworks, such as:

• Firecrackers
• Roman candles
• Bottle rockets

These contain a maximum of 50 milligrams of explosive material.

“Display fireworks” such as large aerial shells and salutes, are strictly for licensed professionals only. These include:

• Devices with more than 130 milligrams of explosive material.
• Aerial shells with more than 60 grams of pyrotechnic composition.

Fireworks Use: What’s Not Allowed

When using consumer fireworks, the law prohibits:

• Igniting or discharging fireworks on public or private property without express permission from the owner.
• Directing fireworks at another person.
• Discharging fireworks from or toward a building or vehicle.
• Discharging fireworks within 150 feet of a building or vehicle, even if owned by the user.
• Using fireworks while under the influence of alcohol or drugs

Safety Tips for Responsible Use

To ensure a safe and enjoyable celebration:

• Only purchase fireworks from licensed dealers.
• Carefully read and follow instructions on the packaging.
• Use fireworks in a safe, open area away from buildings and flammable materials.
• Keep a bucket of water or fire extinguisher nearby.
• Always supervise children—never leave them unattended with fireworks.
• Never use fireworks while under the influence of alcohol or drugs
